Michael Mathews: How to Write a Best Selling Book

Michael Mathews shares several tried and tested techniques to create your own best selling book and how it can help your business.

What do you think a best selling book can do for your business? Michael Mathews knows. In this interview, Michael shares with Ben Chai several tips on how you can create your own best selling book.

Should there be a problem with playing and listening to the video, you will find a summary of Michael’s book writing tips below the video. However we recommend you listen to Mathews as there are many more in-depth insights than our notes provide

Best Selling Book Tip 1

Plan and research

The first port of call for any major project is to plan! Plan and research the topic that you’d like to write about. When you plan, break down everything you want to say and build a step-by-step outline of the book.

Once you’ve got an outline of the book, the time it takes to write the thing becomes a much simpler process. You don’t need to spend the time thinking about what you’re going to write, you already have writing prompts to guide you.

On top of that, you also now know what research you’re going to have to do to ensure that the information you are presenting to your reader is valid and not, as Michael puts it, “from your imagination”.

When you build an outline, you also give yourself a “bird’s eye view” of the book. This means that you can look at the overall structure and guide the reader logically through the message or story that you’re trying to share.

Best Selling Book Tip 2

Just write the book

The next stage is to write the book! Don’t think about marketing, don’t think about editing, don’t think about who you’re going to hire to design the cover, just write the book.

If you’re constantly editing your work as soon as you’ve written it, you’ll get trapped in perfectionism. You get distracted from the overall concept of the book. A great way to think about it is that editing is destructive and writing is constructive, if you try and do both at the same time it’s like shovelling snow whilst it’s still snowing.

You’ll have plenty of time to edit the book later. As they say, “Done is better than Perfect”.

Best Selling Book Tip 3

Schedule a time of day to write

For most of you reading this, the actual writing part will seem like the hardest part. To make it easier, schedule a time of day to write. This is typically a far simpler task when the rest of your household is asleep. Early mornings work well as does late at night.

Develop a ritual for writing. This may mean that you set aside a location purely for writing and in the lead-up to sitting down at your laptop, you make a drink in the same mug, put on a piece of music, and settle into an imaginative mindset.

The ritual element is important because it adds to the habit of writing. As mentioned earlier, writing doesn’t come naturally to many, but like any other skill, when you make a habit out of writing, you will find it easier to repeat.

Best Selling Book Tip 4

Chunk your writing down

Mike’s final piece of advice is to chunk your writing goals down so that you have a daily target to hit. For example, if you estimate your book to be 300 pages and you want to write the book in a month, divide the number of pages by the number of days (in this case 300/30), and you have your target for the number of pages to write per day.

Naturally, if you’re feeling good and the words are flowing out of you, exceed that target number. However, as long as you hit your minimum goal then you’ll have your bestseller written in no time!
